It was shortly after 11:32pm that I heard anchor, Wolf Blitzer say, "Senator Barack Obama is now the President-elect." Those may not have been his exact words, but you were there so you know what he said.
I cried, and I made several phone calls. First, to my old boss, MG(R) John Phillips, a 1960s Tuskegee Airman. He, like so many others (including myself), thought that he'd never see the day that a black man would become President-elect of the United States of America. The other calls were to family members.
As proud as I am for my race and for America, I thought of what the moment really meant. I thought of an interview I heard last month. Ben Jones, aka, Cooter from the Dukes of Hazard said something very important. Again, I'm paraphrasing. "If your car is in a ditch and you need help getting it out. It doesn't matter what color the person is who's helping you." He proceeded to say that he'd be casting his vote for Barack Obama. Good on you Cooter!
Some of us are in our consequences state -- suffering from choices that were made by us or others, and we're seeking help. That's what the moment means to some. Too others it may be a form of redemption.
Anyway, you want to know my point, right?
Okay, here it is. Let's us relish and be thankful for the moment that this country was able to put aside some of its prejudices and elect a man based on the content of his character and not on the color of his skin. Yeah! We were alive to see it.
Most importantly, though, let us also remember that Barack Obama is a man: learned, eloquent, and charasmatic. Barack Obama is also a man who will make mistakes, will not always deliver on his promise, and will sometimes do things that are not in our best interest. Remember, he did not run a black or white campaign. He ran as an human-being, an American, etc.
I know you're saying, "And your point is?"
As proud as we are at having been able to see this moment WE MUST ALWAYS REMEMBER THAT BARACK OBAMA IS NOT THE SAVIOR OF THE WORLD OR OUR LIVES. JESUS CHRIST IS LORD.
Be proud and be blessed!
